26 year old songwriter and vocalist Loulou met co-writer and drummer Dan through the notoriously open and collaborative Bristol music scene. Through a mutual love of artists ranging from GoGo Penguin, Tigran Hamasyan, Akale Wube through to Little Dragon and Four Tet, Loulou and Dan decided to form their own band and thus Beula was born. For the past year, Beula has been part of an artist development program led by Saffron - an organisation supporting Womxn and Female-led acts in music. Over their time on the program Beula have created their debut single ‘Vee’ and an EP ‘Cryptic Buckling’ which will follow on the 14th of November.

Inspired by the discovery of Esbjörn Svensson Trio’s 'Seven Days of Falling/Elevation of Love', the basis for the ‘Vee’ began with a few sparse chords followed by a continuous bass line, scattered with drums and percussion and synthy samples. Exploring elements of R&B, Jazz and Electronica, the Beula recording experience was a relaxed affair. The musicians spent a few weeks in the studio drinking wine and ingesting as much music as possible, recording parts as and when inspiration struck. The lyrics are an interplay between malicious intent and benevolence; fighting with - and blaming - others, whilst fighting and blaming yourself, but never being sure who you are.
